HISTORIC PHOTOS
FSA - OWI Black & White Photographs Collection at The Library of Congress
The
black-and-white photographs of the Farm Security
Administration-Office of War Information Collection are a landmark in
the history of documentary photography. The images show Americans at
home, at work, and at play, with an emphasis on rural and small-town
life and the adverse effects of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl,
and increasing farm mechanization. Some of the most famous images
portray people who were displaced from farms and migrated West or to
industrial cities in search of work. In its latter years, the project
documented America's mobilization for World War II. The collection
includes about 164,000 black-and-white negatives; this release
provides access to over 160,000 of these images. The FSA-OWI
photographers also produced about 1600 color photographs.
FSA - OWI Color Photographs Collection at The Library of Congress
The color
photographs of the Farm Security Administration-Office of War
Information Collection include scenes of rural and small-town life,
migrant labor, and the effects of the Great Depression. A significant
number of the color photographs concern the mobilization effort for
World War II and portray aircraft manufacturing, military training,
and the nation's railroads. The 1,600 color photographs produced by
the FSA and OWI photographers are less well known and far less
extensive than the 164,000 black-and-white photographs in the
collection.
The Home Front: Manitowoc County In World War II
A digital collection of
photographic images, oral histories, published sources and documents,
artifacts, and other resources which help to document and explain the
history of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin during the period from 1939 to
1947—both the more universally shared home front experiences and
activities as they played out in this specific county, and those more
unique activities which especially defined the area during the War.
Photographs from World War Two by Dickey Chapelle at The Wisconsin Historical Society
Wisconsin-born photojournalist Chapelle was one of the first
women foreign correspondents to cover World War II, the Korean and
Vietnam Wars, and other U.S. military engagements worldwide. Her
writings and pictures appeared in the magazines Reader's Digest,
National Geographic, Look, and the Saturday Evening Post from the
1940's to the 1960's. Chapelle was killed in Vietnam in 1965 while
pursuing her profession.
Hawaii War Records Depository - Photographs - Honolulu Advertiser & Honolulu Star Bulletin
The Hawaii War Records Depository contains a wealth of
photographs documenting various aspects of life in Hawaii during
World War II. These photographs are an important resource depicting
the military activities in Hawaii, life on the homefront, and the
military's relationship with Hawaii's civilian population during the
war. The Hawai'i War Records Depository (HWRD) holds approximately
1,000 newspaper photographs clearly identified as being from the
Honolulu Star Bulletin and 330 photographs clearly identified as
being from the Honolulu Advertiser, representing primary material
from the two English-language Honolulu newspapers.
Hawaii War Records Depository - Photographs - U.S. Army Signal Corps and U.S. Navy
The
Hawaii War Records Depository (HWRD), which was established at the
University of Hawaii Library in 1943, is an extensive collection of
materials that document life in Hawaii during World War II. The HWRD
includes 880 photographs taken by the U.S. Army Signal Corps and the
U.S. Navy during World War II. These photographs, taken between 1941
and 1946, document the impact of World War II in Hawaii. They depict
Army and Navy activities in Hawaii and illustrate the military's
relationship with Hawaii's civilian population.

Flickr - The Library of Congress. The FSA-OWI photographs, 1930s-40s in color
These
vivid color photos from the Great Depression and World War II capture
an era generally seen only in black-and-white. Photographers working
for the United States Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later
the Office of War Information (OWI) created the images between 1939
and 1944. We invite your tags and comments! Also, more identification
information. (The current titles come from the agency's original
documentation, which was sometimes incomplete.) The FSA/OWI pictures
depict life in the United States, including Puerto Rico and the
Virgin Islands, with a focus on rural areas and farm labor, as well
as aspects of World War II mobilization, including factories,
railroads, aviation training, and women working. The original images
are color transparencies ranging in size from 35 mm. to 4x5 inches.
They complement the better-known black-and-white FSA/OWI photographs,
made during the same period.

A photoset by Joey Harrison. "Before I came along, and with
diminishing returns thereafter, my mom pursued photography
passionately and studiously. She created a large body of work
centered around her life with my father and her own family." A
truly amazing collection of photographs and personal stories from
mid-century America. One of my absolute favorites! You really need to

Joey's mom that go along with each of them.

Time Machine Vintage
Ready-to-Wear and Made-to-Order vintage reproduction clothing.
*Our Experience* --- A unit member purchased two garments (a blouse and trousers) from the Made-to-Order line and measurements were provided per the company's made to order guidelines. However, the garments had issues with fit, one major and one minor. The cuffed trousers were a bit too long; this alteration was within reason and is to be expected when dealing with mail order clothing. However, the blouse was four inches too big across the shoulders, a major alteration and something you hope to avoid by going with the Made-to-Order option. Expect to visit a tailor or experienced dressmaker for fitting and alterations, be sure they have knowledge in how the specific period clothing is supposed to fit. Improper fit is one of the risks of Made-to-Order and Off-the-Rack / Ready-to-Wear clothing. Also, hand sewing (hem) and zipper application on the trousers was not very professional looking.

Rocket Originals
We're based in Sheffield in the U.K. We've been collecting and wearing vintage clothing from the 1940's and 1950's and been on the "scene" for over 30 years now since when were teenagers - and we don't intend to change now. As for our business, we have our own range of Rocket Originals' shoes for men and women manufactured, we're very fussy in trying to get things right (yep, we drive our manufactures up the wall at times!) and try to get them as authentic as possible, they're made from original patterns in most cases. Our ladies sweaters are also manufactured in England. All the designs are taken from vintage knitting patterns, and one of the companies we use still has a vintage mechanical knitting machine, so we have some of ours knitted on that (very authentic!)
They run a bit narrow through the toes.

Original historical patterns.
Reproduction and original historical patterns.
Reproduction vintage patterns from the Vogue Archives. Even though they are vintage reproductions, they fit like modern sewing patterns and have large amounts of ease, which is not appropriate for clothing of the 1930s & 1940s. Stitcher be warned, make a mock-up first. (Regardless, you should always make a mock-up first!) Search eBay for out of print designs.
Reproduction vintage patterns from the Simplicity Archives. A Mock-Up is suggested, the patterns may have the same modern fit issues as the Vintage Vogue. Search eBay for out of print designs.
Reproduction vintage patterns from the Butterick Archives. A Mock-Up is suggested, the patterns may have the same modern fit issues as the Vintage Vogue. Search eBay for out of print designs.
